This exhibit explains what lung volume is and how habits influence this measure.

Visitors can test their lungs’ vital capacity. This is the amount of air that can be forced out of the lungs after a maximal inspiration. After this exhale some air will be left inside the lungs, occupying the so-called residual volume. Different factors like gender, smoking, and sports, influence someone’s lung volume. In general, women have smaller lung volume than man, smokers have smaller lung volume than non-smokers, and athletes have bigger lung volume than couch dwellers. People living at higher altitudes even have slightly bigger lung capacities to compen-sate for the thinner air, containing less oxygen.

  1. Blow as hard as you can against the propeller.
  2. Only exhale one time! So empty your lungs in one breath.
  3. What is your score?
